Field Trip vs FieldSpy vs FieldRat: an honest comparison
We make FieldRat, so take the framing with that in mind — but the facts below are checkable: AppExchange listing status, pricing tiers, and what each tool's public material actually documents as of June 2026.
Field Trip
Field Trip was the long-standing free option for field population reporting — originally from Qandor/RingLead, later associated with ZoomInfo. It answered "how often is this field actually filled in," which is most of what admins needed for years. It has since been removed from the Salesforce AppExchange, so it's no longer installable for orgs that didn't already have it. Its public material never documented dependency scanning (where a field is referenced across flows, Apex, reports) or a risk-scored retirement workflow — it was a usage report, not a deletion decision tool.
FieldSpy
FieldSpy positions itself as a modern Field Trip alternative and bundles Arovy's Data Dictionary as part of its offering. The Data Dictionary piece is genuinely useful for org documentation. Where it differs from FieldRat: the Data Dictionary tier is a paid upsell rather than included free, and FieldSpy's public material doesn't document a 0–100 deletion risk score or a built-in retirement workflow with audit export — those are decision-support layers on top of usage data, not just the usage data itself.
FieldRat
FieldRat covers the same field population reporting Field Trip provided (Field Analysis, always free), then adds dependency scanning across 11 metadata types natively in seconds (Quick Scan) or 23 metadata types via metadata ZIP (Deep Scan, including Apex and flow references), a 0–100 Deletion Risk Score combining usage and dependency breadth, a searchable Field Dictionary, Run Comparison for drift detection, a Scheduler, and a retirement workflow with audit-ready Excel/CSV exports. 100% native to Salesforce, no data leaves the org during Quick Scan.
Where they actually differ
- AppExchange availability: FieldRat is listed; Field Trip is not (removed); FieldSpy is listed.
- Dependency scanning: FieldRat covers 11–23 metadata types depending on scan depth; neither Field Trip's nor FieldSpy's public material documents equivalent breadth.
- Pricing: FieldRat is fully free with no upsell tier; FieldSpy's Data Dictionary is a paid add-on; Field Trip was free but is no longer obtainable.
- Retirement workflow: Only FieldRat ships a risk score plus audit-export retirement flow as a built-in feature.
